Do gamblers always lie?

Living with a problem gambler can be extremely difficult. Gamblers will often lie to cover their tracks and will deny they have a problem, as this will allow them to carry on with what they know deep down to be a devastating problem.

Addiction is an illness that affects many people all over the world. There are lots of different types of addiction, including drug, alcohol, and even sex addictions. However, one type of addiction that appears to be a growing problem in the UK is gambling addiction. This is due in large part to the fact that gambling has become so accessible thanks to the many online gaming sites that make it easier for people to gamble from the comfort of their homes. In fact, these days, gambling is something that can be done from anywhere as long as there are a suitable internet connection and a device such as a mobile phone or tablet on hand. Living with a problem gambler can be extremely difficult. Gamblers will often lie to cover their tracks and will deny they have a problem, as this will allow them to carry on with what they know deep down to be a devastating problem. Below are a few of the lies that are commonly told by problem gamblers. Denial is common among all types of addicts, but the truth is that most gamblers will not want to see themselves as addicts. They can be manipulative and may be able to convince loved ones that they are worrying unnecessarily. Their focus will be gambling, and it may become apparent to loved ones, that other responsibilities and relationships are taking a backseat to the need to gamble. However, even when it is clear to everyone else that there is a problem the gambler will usually deny that this exists.

I Can Stop at Any Time

This is another common lie that many problem gamblers believe. They are convinced that they do not have a problem and will swear on anything that they could stop if they wanted to. It may be the case that the gambler will stop gambling for a short period just to prove a point. However, if they do have an addiction, it will not be long before the pull of the gamble draws them back in again.

Nobody Else is Affected by My Gambling

Many gamblers believe that what they are doing is not hurting anyone else. Because there are no apparent physical effects of gambling, they will convince themselves that what they are doing is harmless. However, many gamblers will not realise that their addiction will get worse and worse and will eventually affect other members of their family. Many people with gambling problems will leave their family members without any money, and some will find that they are in danger of losing their homes. Relationship breakdowns are another problem as gambling addicts begin to put everything else in their lives behind their need to gamble. Gambling can, after a while, also lead to some mental health problems. Many gamblers suffer from depression, violent outbursts, and extreme mood swings. Some gamblers may even experience suicidal tendencies after losing large amounts of money.
