The first World Cup to take place in the Northern Hemisphere's winter means the 2022/23 Premier League season has a schedule unlike any other previous campaign. Fixture compilation is a tricky enough job without arguably the world's most high-profile sporting event happening right in the middle of the season. That is the challenge that faced Premier League chiefs this year, leading to debate about whether players would have sufficient restorative break, while also navigating domestic and European competition with their clubs. The Premier League season started a week earlier than normal, on August 5, and will also finish a week later, on May 28, in order to accommodate the World Cup. When is the Premier League winter break?

Amid escalating debate over the demands placed on players, a mid-season break for England's top flight was first introduced in 2019/20. The 2021/22 Premier League season implemented a winter break between January 23 and February 7, 2022. There had been no winter break the previous season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the compacted scheduled this time around means there is no such break planned for 2022/23. Instead, the competition will be halted during the World Cup, with the break lasting more than six weeks. The action will stop after the weekend of November 12 and resume on December 26. That will take some adapting to for fans and players, with a World Cup tournament usually synonymous with the summer months in England taking place just when the domestic season is usually at its busiest, coldest and darkest. When are Premier League players at the World Cup?

Players must be released for the 2022 World Cup on November 14, and the finals start six days later. The World Cup final is on December 18, meaning Premier League players who go all the way at the tournament with their countries will have little more than a week before they return to top-flight duties in the EPL. Conversely, Premier League players who don't go to the World Cup will have more than five weeks away from competitive action, while stars whose sides are knocked out in the group stage, which finishes on December 2, could have a break of almost four weeks.
