Turning Bonuses Into Cash

This is where the magic happens.

Once you have received your bonus bets from a bookie – either as a welcome bonus or from another promo – the next step is to use a betting exchange to turn them into withdrawable cash. This is done by placing a back bet at the bookie using the bonus, and then matching that with a lay bet on the same outcome at the exchange.

Let’s look at each step of the process…

Choosing What To Bet On

Not all bets are equal. If we want to get high returns from our bonus bet we need to look for a specific type of match. The vast majority of bonus bets in Australia fall into the category that we call Stake Not Returned, or SNR. This means that, if the bonus bet wins, the bookie only returns the winnings amount to your account. They do not return the bonus bet stake. For example, if we were to place a $100 bonus bet on Roger Federer to win a tennis match at odds of 1.20, the bookie would only return $20 to our account if he won. For this reason, it is best to use SNR bonus bets at higher odds. The second thing that we need to look for is a selection with similar odds at the bookie and at the exchange. This will help us extract as much as possible from the bonus bet. If this is sounding a little tricky so far, don’t worry. Thanks to the Bonusbank ATM, the process of finding something to bet on only takes seconds. The ATM is constantly scanning for the best matches for you to use your bonus bets on. All you need to do is select the appropriate bookie from the dropdown menu and then sort the table so that the highest SNR value is at the top. In the example above we could guarantee a return of $78.44 profit from a $100 bonus bet. This would be done by placing a back bet on the ‘draw’ outcome in the game between Atl Madrid and Leicester, and then placing a corresponding lay bet.

Calculating How Much To Lay

As mentioned previously, in matched betting we don’t like risk. We don’t want to have to cross our fingers and hope that the game ends in a draw so that we can make money. Instead, we want to lock-in a profit no matter what happens. The way that we do this is by calculating a lay stake that will give us an equal profit on all outcomes. You can do this by using a formula that factors in the stake, the back odds, the lay odds, and the Betfair commission rate…or you can just use our calculator.

The easiest way to access the calculator is directly from the ATM. Depending on the type of bet you are placing, you can click on the number in either the SR or the SNR column and the appropriate calculator will pop up. The calc will be pre-populated with the back odds, lay odds, and commission rate for that selection. All you need to do is enter the stake. Once all of the information is entered, the bottom section of the calculator will tell you how much you need to lay (your lay stake) and how much you need in your Betfair account in order to do it (your liability). If the liability amount is too high you should either look for another option at lower odds, or split your bonus bet into smaller stakes. Most bookies will allow you to split your bonuses when you receive them, and this is something that we recommend. It will reduce the liability needed on your bets, and also give you more practice of backing and laying when you first start out. The calculator will also show you what your return on the bet will be, both as a dollar amount and as a percentage of your stake. You should be aiming for about 70% return as a beginner, and increasing that as you gain more experience.

Placing Your Bets

Once you have identified a match and calculated your lay stake, the next step is to actually place the bets. At Ladbrokes you should click on the odds to add the bet to your betslip: After double-checking that we have added the correct selection (in this case, ‘the draw’) and that the odds haven’t changed, we need to activate the bonus bet. How you activate a bonus bet will vary from bookie to bookie, but there is usually an obvious way to do it in the betslip. For Ladbrokes you would just click where it says ‘Bonus Bet’. Other bookies might have a dropdown menu or a radio button that you have to click. After the bonus is activated it will ask you to confirm the bet, but you don’t want to do that yet. Instead, you should go over to Betfair and set up everything there.

Betfair looks different to a traditional bookmaker. This is because there are options to both back and lay. As matched bettors, 99% of the bets that we place at Betfair will be lay bets. In the image above we can see that the back price for The Draw is 5.4 and the lay price is 5.5. This matches what we saw on the ATM. The figure of $1376 below the odds of 5.5 represents the available liquidity. This is the amount of money that is available to bet at that price. Once all of that liquidity is gone the odds will change. It is important for us that the liquidity amount is higher than our lay stake, otherwise our bet will not be fully matched. In this case, $1376 is much higher than our required lay stake of $82.57, so there is nothing to worry about. By clicking on the lay price we will add the selection to the betslip and can then enter our lay stake: You can see that the Liability amount is the same as we saw on the calculator earlier. Once you are happy that the odds and stakes are correct for both bets you can then hit confirm. After that it is just a case of waiting for the game to end.

Outcomes

Let’s have a look at the possible outcomes for this match:

If the game is a draw we will win $450 ($550 minus $100 stake) at the bookmaker, but lose $371.56 at Betfair – Overall profit of $78.44 If the game is not a draw we will win $82.57 at Betfair and pay commission of 5% ($4.13). We will lose nothing at the bookmaker as we were using a bonus bet which did not cost us anything – Overall profit of $78.44 Our bonus has been banked, and there are plenty more where that came from!
