How Does a Trifecta Work?

Let's use the example of a horse race.

You select No. 1 to win, No. 2 to run second, and No. 3 to run third. This is called a ‘straight trifecta' and your runners must finish first, second and third in the correct order. You place a bet of $1, and runners 1, 2, and 3 finish the race in that order. Congratulations, you have won the trifecta. If the result was 1, 3, and 2, in that order, then your bet would lose. Unless you placed a boxed trifecta! There are two basic kinds of trifectas: the straight trifecta and the boxed trifecta.

Straight Trifecta

The straight trifecta requires the partner to nominate the first three horses in the race, in order.

Boxed Trifecta

The boxed trifecta allows the punter to simply nominate three (or more) horses, and they can finish first, second and third in any order. It costs more to place a boxed trifecta, with the cost increasing depending on how many horses you wish to include.

How To Calculate Trifecta Odds

The trifecta is a type of pooled betting, like most exotic bet types. The TAB run the trifecta pools in Australia, with each of their three totes:

These 3 totes each have a separate pool.

All trifecta wagers are combined into one pool, the operator (TAB) takes out their commission (called the ‘takeout'), government taxes and the remaining is divided equally among those who have the winning combination. The amount each punter is entitled to is the dividend.

How Do Trifecta Payouts Work?

Each trifecta bet is allocated a flexi percentage. This percentage depends on the type of trifecta you take, the number of horses you include, and the size of your stake. If your bet is a winner, your payout is that percentage of the declared dividend. In a straight trifecta, you simply nominate one horse to win, one horse to finish second, and one horse to finish third. The cost for a straight trifecta is $1, and your flexi percentage is 100%. If you were to stake $2 on the same bet, your flexi percentage would be 200%. If you staked $5, it would be 500%, and so on.

How To Figure Out a Trifecta Payout

To figure out your trifecta payout, you simply multiply your flexi percentage to the declared dividend. For example: if the trifecta dividend is $1,500, and your flexi percentage is 200%, your payout is $3,000.

What is an Average Trifecta Payout?

What is a Boxed Trifecta?

A boxed trifecta allows you to select the three horses you want in your trifecta without having to nominate the order in which they will finish. You simply ‘box' the three horses in the bet, and if they finish in the top three – in any order – you win. A boxed trifecta also allows you to include more than three horses in your trifecta. You may wish to box four, five, six or any other number of horses in your trifecta. If any three of the horses you include fill the placings, you win. Using the three runners – No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 – from our earlier example, these are all the possible finishing combinations they can finish in: So your three runners can finish in any order of the first three places and you are guaranteed of winning the trifecta.

How Does a Boxed Trifecta Work?

A boxed trifecta gives you more combinations of 1st, 2nd and 3rd and therefore, a greater chance of winning.

The cost of a boxed trifecta – with a flexi percentage of 100% – depends on how many combinations the bet allows.

How To Calculate a Boxed Trifecta Payout?

For example, to place a boxed trifecta with three horses, the cost is $6 (3x2x1) for 100% flexi percentage.

$1 x 3x2x1 x 100% = $6

Bet x Number Of Combinations x Flexi Percentage = Payout

The number of combinations is determined by multiplying the number of horses included in the trifecta, followed by the next 2 descending numbers.

For example: for four horses, it's $24 (4x3x2), and so on:

5 horses (5x4x3): $60

(5x4x3): $60 6 horses (6x5x4): $120

(6x5x4): $120 7 horses (7x6x5): $210

(7x6x5): $210 8 horses (8x7x6): $336

(8x7x6): $336 9 horses (9x8x7): $504

Trifecta vs Boxed Trifecta

While a straight trifecta is just $1 for 100%, it is more costly to place a boxed trifecta – possibly much more costly, depending how many horses you want to include. However, you have many more combinations with a boxed trifecta and a greater chance of winning. That's what you have to weigh up as a punter… risk versus reward!

How To Place a Trifecta

While trifecta pools are hosted by TAB, you can place a trifecta bet with any online bookmaker, and they'll pay you out with the same dividends. Just head to the race you want to bet, and the trifecta (and other exotic bet options) won't be hard to find. Then you enter your selections for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and your stake, and you're on!

How To Place a Boxed Trifecta Bet

Placing a boxed trifecta bet is much the same as placing a trifecta, however you don't need to nominate 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

The beauty of flexi betting is that it allows you to place a boxed trifecta with a larger number of horses at a lower cost. The trade-off, however, is your flexi percentage – and thus your payout – is lower. For example, using the earlier trifecta example, you decide to include runner No .4 with No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, so you now have four runners in your box trifecta. With four runners in a boxed trifecta, the four runners are coupled in all possible finishing combinations to finished first, second and third. Fourth place is not considered in the final trifecta results. The combinations are: 1/2/3 1/2/4 1/3/2 1/3/4 1/4/2 1/4/3 2/1/3 2/1/4 2/3/1 2/3/4 2/4/1 2/4/3 3/1/2 3/1/4 3/2/1 3/2/4 3/4/1 3/4/2 4/1/2 4/1/3 4/2/1 4/2/3 4/3/1 4/3/2 So with 24 possible outcomes, to get the 100% dividend that is displayed on the screen after the race you need to bet $24, this equals a $1 bet on each possible outcome. You can reduce your $24 bet to a smaller amount, say $12.This would mean your initial bet of $12 equals a 50c bet on each possible outcome. If you win your box trifecta, that possible outcome has a 50c bet on it, you would then be paid out 50% of the dividend on the screen. You're not limited to a strict number for a percentage either, depending on your bookmaker, you could opt to take 67% of a trifecta, instead of putting on a dollar amount. For example, if you took four runners in a winning box trifecta and the dividend was $100, here is your bet amount and collect by taking a flexi-bet: Bet Amount Percentage Collect $24 100% $100 $12 50% $50 $6 25% $25 There is no limitation in the number of horses you can include in a flexi-bet trifecta but the more horses you add, the smaller the amount you collect, should you win. This type of trifecta betting is the most popular form of betting for the Melbourne Cup.
