Indiana mom, 5 kids who won $25K by betting on Kentucky Derby winner credit divine intervention Stacie Conard and her five children won $25,000 when Rich Strike pulled off the upset with 80 to 1 odds, winning the 148th Kentucky Derby. A southern Indiana family who won big with Rich Strike's victory said it was thanks to divine intervention. "We were just crazy screaming. I was hyperventilating," Stacie Conard told ABC affiliate WHAS. "The kids were trying to tell me to calm down, but they were all pretty excited." Conard and her five children won $25,000 when Rich Strike pulled off the upset with 80 to 1 odds, winning the 148th Kentucky Derby. "I'm sure all the neighbors heard us. It was just chaotic in the house," Conard said. She said they didn't physically come to the track, instead they watched the excitement at home and placed their bets online. It's a tradition Conard said they've had for years; everyone chooses horses based on if they like their name and if it resonates with them. This year, the decision was unanimous.

"Which never happens," Conard said.

The name helped guide them, but so did another feeling they all shared. "Their dad had passed away several years ago, and we were joking around that dad was going to help us win the Derby this year," Conard said.

She said her youngest daughter, Harper, had the most intuition.

"I don't know. I just kinda felt like it," Harper said.

And it wasn't because her father, Dennis, was a gambler. In fact, Conard said it was quite the opposite - he disliked it. But, they had a feeling he would play a role. "I know that sounds crazy, but I don't know, it was just a feeling," she said.

That hope soon turned to reality.

Conard said even the way Rich Strike won gave her chills.

"It was unbelievable that he came from behind and on the last turn won that race," she said.

However, it doesn't stop there. Conard soon had another revelation.

"And then when I realized it was our wedding anniversary," Conard said. "I thought I think your dad really did help us and they agree. They think so too." Dennis died in 2017 after 18 years of marriage. It's a moment that still cuts deep, but the bond they all share is clearly unbroken.

What's a Dublin drop?

An Irish car bomb, Irish slammer, Irish bomb shot, or Dublin drop is a cocktail, similar to a boilermaker, made by dropping a bomb shot of Irish cream and Irish whiskey into a glass of Irish stout.

Cocktail made by mixing stout, whiskey, and Irish cream

This article is about the alcoholic drink. For discussion of the use of car bombs in the island of Ireland, see car bomb An Irish car bomb, Irish slammer, Irish bomb shot, or Dublin drop[1] is a cocktail, similar to a boilermaker, made by dropping a bomb shot of Irish cream and Irish whiskey into a glass of Irish stout.[2]

Origin [ edit ]

The "Irish" in the name refers to the drink's Irish ingredients; typically Guinness stout, Baileys Irish Cream, and Jameson Irish Whiskey.[3] The term "car bomb" combines reference to its "bomb shot" style, as well as the noted car bombings of Ireland's Troubles.[3][4][5] The name is considered by many to be offensive, with many bartenders refusing to serve it.[6][7][8] Some people, including Irish comedians, have likened it to ordering an "Isis" or "Twin Towers" in an American bar.[4][9] In 2014, The Junction nightclub in Oxford included the drink in promotional material for St. Patrick's Day.[10][11][12] This drew complaints, followed by withdrawal of the promotion and a public apology by the bar manager.[10][11][12] The drink is known by other names, including: "Irish slammer",[13] "Dublin drop",[1] or simply the "Irish bomb" to avoid offending patrons.[14][failed verification]

Preparation [ edit ]

The whiskey is layered over the Irish cream in a shot glass, and the shot glass is then dropped into a glass of stout. The drink should be consumed quickly as the cream will cause it to curdle within a short time.[5][15][16] While Kahlúa was part of the original recipe, it is often excluded from the drink today. Some refer to the original recipe as a Belfast car bomb.[17][18][19][20]
