The Rugby World Cup (RWC) is the premier men’s 15’s rugby union tournament that is hosted in a different country every four years. The last Rugby World Cup took place in 2015 in England and hosted 20 different nations from around the world. These nations competed against each other for 44 days to find a champion. In 2015, this champion was once again New Zealand. I was interested to analyze the 2015 Rugby World Cup data and find ways as to which this data could be useful for potential Rugby World Cup Athletes, coaches, and even scouts. I obtained data from http://teaching.statistics-is-awesome.org/rugby-world-cup-2015-players-data/ which analyzed facts from 643 athletes from 20 nations. I was interested in learning more about what it takes for each position on a rugby team to qualify for such a premier tournament so I decided to analyze the correlation between height and weight between nine rugby positions as well as a whole. Below is my interpretation of this data which includes both descriptive and inferential statistics, results, and recommendations. First we look at the average age of a rugby player who played in the 2015 RWC which is 27 years old as shown in Figure A. The average number of international matches played by a rugby player who played in the 2015 RWC is 32 games as shown in Figure B.

Figure A. Average Age of a Rugby Player is 27

Figure B. Average number of international games played

From here, I was interested in finding out whether or not height and weight played a pivotal role in getting selected to be a RWC 2015 athlete. I analyzed the RWC 2015 dataset as a whole as well as broke down the data per position. As a whole, there is a positive correlation between height and weight of 0.58 p value Figure C. As shown in Figure C, you may notice that the graph shows a direct correlation between height and weight with the p value being 0.58. The average height of a RWC player was 186 centimeters and the average weight being 102 kilograms.

Figure C. Correlation between height and weight between all RWC 2015 athletes

Unlike looking at the data as a whole, the correlation between height and weight within each position was different. From my data set, I was able to analyze nine key positions in a game of rugby. These results are below. For the wing position, the average weight is between 90-94kgs and only 34% of wings fall between this category. The average height is 185cm and only 26% are actually this height. The wings are generally positioned on the outside of the backline. Their primary function is to finish off moves and score tries, that is why it is optimal that this position is leaner, taller and faster than most. Yet again there is a positive correlation with height and weight and that in order to make it to this level or rugby, a winger must between the average or greater. For the back row positions the average height is 189 centimeters and average weight is 106 kilograms. These athletes are usually your smaller, very fit, and faster athletes so there was no surprise that there was a positive correlation between height and weight for this position with a correlation coefficient of 0.55.

The scrumhalf which is the link between the forwards and the backs receive the ball from the line-out and remove the ball from the back of the scrum, usually passing it to the fly-half. They also feed the scrum. The average height of a RWC 2015 scrumhalf was 177 centimeters and 84 kilograms. There is a positive correlation between height and weight in this position with a correlation coefficient of 0.82. Props form the first row of the scrum and are often among the strongest players in a team. Some of the more successful props have short necks and broad shoulders to absorb this force as well as powerful legs to drive the scrum forward. The average height of a prop is 184 centimeters and the average weight is 116 kilograms. I was very surprised to see that there was no positive correlation between height and weight due to the correlation coefficient between the two was 0.34 which is not enough for there to be a correlation. The lock forms the second row of the scrum and they scrummage by pushing against the front row thereby providing much of the power of the scrum. They are almost always the tallest players in a team and are usually thrown the ball in lineouts. The average height of a RWC 2015 lock was 198 centimeters and the average weight was 115 kilograms. Height and weight played a positive correlation in this position with a 0.61 correlation coefficient . The hooker is positioned between the two props in the scrum and generally throws the ball into the line-out. Hookers generally have a short back and long arms to aid in binding to the props. The average height of a hooker in the RWC 2015 was 181 centimeters and the average weight was 107 kilograms. There is a positive correlation between the two with a .51 correlation coefficient . A fly-half is a very important aspect to the team as they order the back line. They are usually the first to receive the ball from the scrum-half following a breakdown, line-out or scrum and need to be decisive with what actions to take and be effective at communicating with the outside backs. Fly-halves need good passing and kicking skills. The average height of a fly half who played in the RWC 2015 was 182 centimeters and the average height was 88 kilograms. There is a positive correlation between the two with a correlation coefficient of .60. A full back fields any deep opposition kicks and are often the last line of defense should an opponent break through the back line. The average height is 182 centimeters and the average weight is 90 kilograms. There is a positive correlation between the two with a .63 correlation coefficient.

There are two centers in a rugby team, inside center and outside center. Like the fly-half, they generally possess a good kicking game and are good at reading the play and directing the attack. These players are often fats, swift, and make tries. The average height of a center is 185 centimeters and the average weight is 98 kilograms. Like the prop position, the weight and height does not correlate as the correlation coefficient is .38 showing little to no correlation. After reviewing the data it shows the reader that height and weight at this elite level is very important and could be a factor when getting a chosen spot to play in the Rugby World Cup. Figure D shows the correlation height and weight plays in each position. I hope that this information is beneficial and can be used for future athletes and more.
