Is there such a thing as a safe bet?

Make no mistake. There's no such thing as a "safe bet" when it comes to stocks. Stocks are risky investments. Since stocks historically have generated some of the best returns of any asset class, they, practically by definition, come loaded with additional risk.

Ask Matt: What stock is a safe bet?

— -- Q: I've lost lots of money in the stock market and don't want to lose more. What stock is a safe bet?

A: Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with stocks. And while it's admirable that you're ready to stay invested, your approach might need to be adjusted. Make no mistake. There's no such thing as a "safe bet" when it comes to stocks. Stocks are risky investments. Since stocks historically have generated some of the best returns of any asset class, they, practically by definition, come loaded with additional risk. It might help you to understand what's normal. Stocks, on average, have returned 9.5% a year since 1928, says IFA.com. That's their long-term return. But the road to 9.5% average annual returns has been a bumpy one. Stocks have a standard deviation of 19.2 percentage points. In English, that means in any given year you have a very good chance of being down 9.7% or up 28.7%, or something in between. If you're not able to withstand the market's volatility, you need to seriously adjust your strategy, and stocks probably aren't the entire solution for you. Some investors try to pick individual stocks they think will have less risk than the overall market, such as utilities or other dividend-paying stocks. And that strategy might work in normal times, but if you pay at a market peak or if the industry is disrupted, you could easy suffer even at the hands of these "safe" stocks, too. Investors looking for safety and security might consider various types of other investments, including bonds. With bonds, you're entitled to a preset rate of return that's a contractual obligation by the borrower, including the U.S. government. You may also need to settle for whatever interest rates you can find being paid by various banks with savings accounts and CDs. Just keep in mind that safety comes at a big price. The less risk you take, the lower your returns will be. But if you want a safe bet, the stock market isn't for you. What is the least common football number?

The least-worn number among current NFLers? A quick scroll through Pro Football Reference turned up the No. 83, worn by just 10 active players, the most notable being Darren Waller of the Raiders, who led all tight ends with 107 catches last season.

They say the NFL is a copycat league, but does that adage apply to uniform numbers? Apparently so. With 32 teams each comprising 53 roster spots, there’s bound to be some overlap, though inevitably, some jersey numbers are more popular than others. However, the number most prevalent among NFL players might surprise you. According to William Ricks—with an assist from ESPN’s Stats and Research department—the league’s most popular uniform number is 26, worn by former Offensive Rookie of the Year Saquon Barkley and Washington Pro Bowler Landon Collins, among others. In fact, the only team without a No. 26 is the Las Vegas Raiders. The No. 2 is similarly well-represented with 28 players—tied with Nos. 23 and 25 for second-most—donning that digit including Matt Ryan and his former Falcons teammate Julio Jones, who adopted the number upon joining the Titans this summer. Bucs veteran Tom Brady, perhaps the most vocal opponent of the league’s new stance on uniform numbers, will be one of 13 players donning 12 in 2021.
