What are the 3 brains we have?

Did you know the human body actually has three brains? Neuroscience over the last few years has shown that aside from your head brain (the one we're all familiar with, the 'cephalic brain'), we also have a heart brain ('cardiac brain') and a gut brain ('enteric brain').

When we’re talking about intuition, one thing that is a sticking point for many business leaders is the idea that intuition is something spiritual, woo-woo, or mythical. A reliance on intuition is something that you won’t find taught in business schools. Rather, conventional business wisdom tells you that you must rely on numbers and data as the driving force behind your decisions. This couldn’t be any farther from the truth, and that is why I am so passionate about bringing the idea of intuitive intelligence into the workplace. Intuition is actually a complex inner working of your brain and other parts of your body, and scientific evidence tells us it is very real and very reliable — when you understand it and know how to listen/act on it. Did you know the human body actually has three brains? Neuroscience over the last few years has shown that aside from your head brain (the one we’re all familiar with, the ‘cephalic brain’), we also have a heart brain (‘cardiac brain’) and a gut brain (‘enteric brain’). Each of these brains is a sophisticated system of sensory neurons, motor neurons, neurotransmitters, and ganglia. They are able to receive and process information, store it, and access it again when needed. They can: sense, learn, remember, communicate, and change!

Cephalic Brain (Head)

86 billion neurons

The seat of language, cognition, consciousness, and creativity

Recognizes, gives meaning, creates narratives.

“I think,” “I reckon,” “I understand”

Cardiac Brain (Heart)

40,000 neurons that can operate independently from the head brain

Handles emotional processing, expression of values, and interpersonal connections

“I feel,” “My heart says,” “Heavy/light heart”

Enteric Brain

100 million neurons

Controls self-preservation and mobilization, responds to challenges, opposition and danger

Determines core sense of self

“It takes guts,” “my gut tells me”

How the Three Brains Relate to Intuition

Here’s a clip from my recent interview on SarderTV in which I discuss the three brains and how they integrate to deepen the intelligence we can draw upon when making decisions. If you’re interested in learning more about how to train your teams how to access this deeper intelligence for better decisions, more sales, and higher levels of creativity, contact us at info@invisible-edgellc.com and let’s talk!

Sudoku

Sudoku is a number placement game that relies on short-term memory. To complete a Sudoku puzzle, you have to look ahead and follow trails of consequences—if you put a 6 in this box, that one must be an 8 and this one a 4, and so on. This type of planning helps improve short-term memory and concentration. You can play Sudoku online, on an app, or on paper. Look for a regular Sudoku in your newspaper, buy a book with a collection of puzzles, or download a free app for your phone or tablet. Sudoku puzzles are available in varying degrees of difficulty. When you're starting out, play the easy games until you learn the rules. If you're playing on paper, use a pencil!
