With automotive stardom, the Corvette has been the lead in Chevrolet’s line-up for the better part of over 60 years. Exceeding the screen presence of actor Clint Eastwood or the musical group The Rolling Stones, the Chevrolet Corvette was born to be an important player. On April 4th, the seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will have a role in the anticipated movie installment of Marvel’s Captain America franchise. A black-on-black version of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the car will be driven by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff (better known as the Black Widow). It only makes sense that a sports car that has intertwined itself with American culture for six decades should have a part in the newest Captain America film. With the movie pending release, it is hard to say if the Corvette Stingray’s role in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will be a cameo appearance or something more involved for the American sports car. The movie car will debut at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show ahead of its appearance in the newest Marvel film. In addition to the unique Corvette Stingray, Chevrolet’s presence at the Chicago Auto Show may without prove popular with comic book fans. A limited edition Captain America/Chevrolet tie-in comic book will be distributed. For the Corvette, its portrayal in film has never provided that one big iconic role. The Aston Martin DB5 has several James Bond movies appearances, the Mini has the Italian Job and the Porsche 917 in the Steve McQueen movie “Le Mans” are a few cars immortalized on the big screen. When a Chevrolet Corvette is prominent in a film, it is often an older or vintage model. In the movie Con Air or the 2009 Star Trek feature film, appearances by antique Corvettes actually worked out badly for the sports car. The Chevrolet Corvette has performed some heroic real-life feats in the name of the United States in motorsports. The nameplate has captured overall or class victories at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. At the recent Daytona sports car race, the all-new current Corvette C7R had a difficult run but the two-car effort did soldier on with the #4 car taking a fifth-place finish in the GTLM class. Automotive product placement in Marvel film franchises is commonplace. Anyone watching the three Iron Man movies would have noticed the supporting role that Audi assumed. Three different versions of the Audi R8 (Coupe, Spyder and a yet-to-be-produced e-tron model), an Audi A8 and the S7 Sportback transported key characters in their roles. The 2012 blockbuster “The Avengers” consisted of Acura products including a NSX convertible piloted by billionaire Tony Stark.
