‘Bongs’, ‘Platt Wazzers’ and ‘Sparrows’ - just a selection of some of the bizarre nicknames for people in one area of Greater Manchester. For those that guessed where, these are the nicknames bestowed to residents around the home of the Latics and the World Pie Eating Championship. That’s right, these names all belong to people from different parts of Wigan borough. The Manchester Evening News asked our MyWigan readers to share the fun names they have for themselves and their neighbours.

This is what they said. Beware, some of these are pretty strange...

‘Bickyites’ - The letter ‘y’ is going to make a lot of appearances in unexpected places on this list - and the nickname for those hailing from Bickershaw is certainly no exception. Social media user Jewels Marchant says this is what people at the eastern end of the borough are called. ‘Bongs’ - Bing, bang, bong, sing, sang, song. This is, apparently, what people from Tyldesley, over on the border with Salford, are known as, says Denise Ashworth on Facebook. The story goes that this nickname derived from Tyldesley’s geographical setting, sitting in the foothills of the Pennines, giving the area an early title of 'Tildsley Banks'

The idea is that the local twang changed 'banks' to 'bongs', resulting in the nickname. Anyone else from Tyldesley wan to corroborate this...?

'Bryner' - 'Bryners are winners!' says Michael Dawber, denoting residents of this neighbourhood in Ashton-in-Makerfield. 'Chowbent', 'Bent' - Atherton residents have earned this nickname thanks to the families that first moved to the area, according to authors John Lunn and J. J. Wright who wrote on the subject in the 1970s and 1920s, respectively. The Chow – recorded as Chew, Cholle and Chowl – family were tenants of the Atherton family living at the valley by Chanters Brook. This part of the township became known as Chow's Bent but the meaning of Bent has been lost, say academics, perhaps meaning bend or slope.

Chowbent, or Bent, was then given as the name of the built-up part of Atherton from the mid-17th century onwards. Local institutions got their names from this trend too, including Chowbent School and Chowbent Chapel. As the population grew, though, the town became known officially as Atherton. But the names Chowbent or Bent are still said to be used by locals, as mentioned by Facebook user Dan Carty. ‘Cow Yed’, ‘Kewyed’, ‘Keaw Yed’ - Just over the border from Wigan, Westhoughton lies in the borough of Bolton but has close ties to Wigan. There’s a few spellings for nicknames here, as detailed by social media users Dan Carty, Darren Haig and Kay Hulme. But the strange collection of letters pales in comparison to the oddness of the stories behind these names for people from Westhoughton. Some tales from Westhoughton locals, also known as ‘Howfeners’ , explain that the nicknames come from the Napoleonic Wars. Perhaps the most unique is the story of a farmer in Westhoughton who found that his cow had got its head stuck in a five-barred gate. Rather than cut the gate, the farmer cut the cow’s head off, since the cow cost less than the gate. It is believed that this event gave way to the crest of Westhoughton, which features a five-barred gate in the background of a cow head.

'Highfielder' - Pretty standard, Highfielders are from Highfield in the south west of Wigan, says Denice Unsworth. 'Incer' - This is the call for people from Ince, according to Emma Salmon. Yet again, an unusual one. This is the title given to residents of Platt Bridge, according to our social media contributors. It's unclear why, but let's hear it in the comments below. 'Sparrow' - 'Sparrowers if you're a Lowtoner,' says Facebook-er Siobhan Clarke. People from Lowton are said to be 'proud Sparrows', but as for where this name comes from, it's unclear. Again, enlighten us in the comments if you think you know! ‘Standisher’ - Another classic -er suffix. Facebook user Emma Anderson says that folk from Standish, in the farthest reaches of the north west of Wigan, answer to this nomenclature.

'Thindleyer' - A nickname for Hindley residents, says Sophie Walls.

'Top Locker' - This one was sent in by Nicholas Webb. For folks around New Springs, the nickname 'Top Locker' appears to come from the proximity to the Top Lock on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, the highest lock on the 'Wigan Flight' of 23 broad-beam locks, according to Wigan Council.
