As a 4.5 player, you have little problem changing the direction and depth of the ball with backhand. Your backhand may not be as solid or consistent as your forehand. Your technique may break down in a pressure situation, but on most moderate shots, you are able to control the point with your backhand.

Read More »The National Tennis Rating Program was set up by the United States Tennis Association in an effort to classify the different levels of male and female tennis players. The primary goal of the system is to provide a method to ensure equitable on-court competition and enjoyment. The program identifies and describes 13 levels of playing ability -- ranging from 1.0 to 7.0 -- based upon several playing characteristics. An NTRP rating of 4.5 means you’re an advanced player, quite skilled and you play in leagues and tournaments. General Characteristics With a 4.5 NTRP rating, you play with power, a variety of spins and with consistency. In addition, you are able to develop a strategy and can change it if necessary to control the momentum of the match. Players at this level have solid footwork, are able to hit the ball deep with direction and most times can handle the pace with ease. Your serves are hit with pace and you seldom double fault. As a doubles player, you play the net with controlled aggression. Forehand Characteristics If you have a 4.5 rating, you have good control of your forehand and can hit the ball consistently deep in the court. You are able to force errors from your opponent by hitting your forehand with pace and a variety of spins. At times you may over hit when faced with a difficult shot, but you're able to control the point on moderately challenging shots. Backhand Characteristics As a 4.5 player, you have little problem changing the direction and depth of the ball with backhand. Your backhand may not be as solid or consistent as your forehand. Your technique may break down in a pressure situation, but on most moderate shots, you are able to control the point with your backhand. Serving and Returning Characteristics To be rated a 4.5 you must be able to hit your serve with good depth and placement. Your serves are aggressive, powerful and you rarely double fault. You can hit a spin serve, which allows you to create an offensive situation. Aggressive returns of serves are a part of your arsenal, and you're able to handle the pace of fast serves. Volley Characteristics The volleys of a 4.5-rated player are controlled with good depth. You have good footwork and you've developed good touch, varying the direction of the ball. Your technique is solid, but at times you make an error by overhitting. Specialty Shots Characteristics Specialty shots include overheads, drop shots and approach shots, and these are also part of your arsenal. You have good control, direction and depth on your approach shots. You overheads are consistent and many times you hit an overhead for a game-ending point.

In a recent study, tennis tops the list of sports scientifically proven to increase life expectancy. Badminton and soccer come in 2nd and 3rd. This study done by Copenhagen City Heart Study (CCHS) and published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings followed close to 9,000 people over 25 years and found that playing tennis added 9.7 years to their lives. There was a clear correlation between social interaction (connecting with others and maintaining strong relationships) and longevity. Also, the physical demands and challenges of playing tennis (and most racquet sports) along with balance and mental strategy requirements of the sport, contributed to positive life-enhancing factors as well. The takeaway? If you haven’t picked up a racquet or found your way to a tennis court, it’s not too late - and you’ll get years back on your life!
