WATCH: Eddie Jones tears into Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell ahead of their match with England WATCH: Eddie Jones tears into Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell ahead of their match with England Wales and France got this year's competition underway with England taking on Ireland on Saturday. What are bonus points in rugby union? Scoring system, explained as Six Nations 2019 continues The Six Nations is upon us again as Ireland bid to retain their crown. Joe Schmidt's men are the favourites once again with England looking to bounce back from their disappointment in 2018. There are four points up for grabs for the winners of each game but there are bonus points on offer across Six Nations. It is somewhat confusing but luckily we have a guide for all your needs across the tournament. What is the bonus point rule? When does it come into play? Here's all you need to know...

Scoring system

The standard scoring in the Six Nations is fairly simple, with four points awarded for a win, two for a draw, and zero points for a loss. But the bonus points system was introduced as a means of encouraging teams to be more attacking in their approach. Therefore sides that lose by just seven points or less are awarded a bonus point. In addition, any team that scores more than four tries in a match can also obtain a bonus point. This means that winning teams can earn up to five points, drawing teams up to four, and even losing teams can still get themselves two points.

Examples

1) Team A beats Team B, 28-0, scoring four tries in the process. Team A is awarded four points for the win, plus a bonus point for scoring four tries, making a total of five points. 2)Team A beats Team B, 21-17, with team A scoring three tries and Team B scoring two. Team A is awarded four points for the win, but no bonus points due to only scoring three tries. Team B's loss means they get zero points, but, as they lost by seven or less points, they get a bonus point. 3) Team A beats Team B, 48-41, with both teams scoring five tries or more.

What is a Grand Slam?

A Grand Slam is the term used when a team wins the whole tournament by beating every other team involved. With each team at the Six Nations playing five times, then they'd need a victory in all five games to achieve the feat. Wales and France have won more Grand Slams than any of the other competing countries since it's progression into a six nation tournament, each managing the achievement on three occasions. England won their second Grand Slam of the modern format back in 2016, and having won back-to-back tournaments, they could draw level with the leaders should they repeat that again this year. Of the others, Ireland have done the Grand Slam once, whilst Scotland and Italy are yet to attain the feat.

What is a Triple Crown?

The Triple Crown is similar to the Grand Slam, except that it refers only to the Home Nations. Prior to the tournament involving five and then six teams, the original competition was contested by England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Since it's inauguration as the Home Nations championship in 1883, England have managed to achieve the Triple Crown 25 times. Wales have managed to do it 20 times, whilst Ireland and Scotland have both achieved this 10 times each. That being said, of the modern format, England and Ireland are both out in front with four Triple Crowns each, followed by three for Wales and a miserly none for Scotland. England were denied a Grand Slam and a Triple Crown in 2017, after losing to Ireland in their final match of the competition.
