Read More »It was another day full of classic Chevys at a southern California car show as the folks at the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo co-hosted their first Bombs Car Show, put on with Classic & Kustom Bombs magazine. The pre-1959 car show featured a gorgeous lineup of mostly classic Chevrolet “bombs” or “bombas”, along with some other pre-’59 non-Chevy customs and classics. Classic and Kustom Bombs magazine is an independent publication that debuted in 2014, featuring pre-1954 classic and customized vehicles, currently with nine issues in their collection. In basic modern car culture terms, a “bomb” or “bomba” is typically considered to be a Chevy lowrider from 1936-1954, though similarly styled lowriders of other marks are sometimes included. With the name often attributed to both its Hispanic lowrider culture heritage and from the rounded body styles replicating the smooth lines of a literal bomb in the rounded shape of the cars and trucks of that era, it is a sub-section of the custom car world that has been recognized to stem back as far as the original zoot suit days. Some excellent examples of Bombs on display at the show included a two-toned blue-on-blue 1948 Chevy Fleetline, a stellar 1948 Chevy Fleetmaster convertible in a rich maroon, a 1952 Chevy pickup, also in a maroon hue, and a two-tone 1954 GMC pickup in satin grey-on-grey. Probably the most unique custom add-on at the show was the custom matching trailer on Ralph Gaxiola’s 1941 Chevy Special Deluxe. An exquisite classic with flawless customizations under the hood and in its pinstriping, the beautiful Chevrolet pulls a matching trailer that carried an equally detailed custom lowrider bicycle. The ’41 is a fourth-generation family car that is still sporting more than 60 percent of its original paint, which is remarkable considering its excellent condition. One custom that took a prime spot right out in front of the Museum was a killer green 1952 Chevy lowrider with suicide doors, wide white wall tires and custom pinstriping and paint. A Ford at the edge of the show stood out for more than just its make, but for the rarity of the model and its fine custom work. A rare 1960 Ford Starliner, a fastback model of the popular Galaxie, only in production for two years, in 1960 and 1961, was parked on the street across from the Museum, awaiting a photoshoot. It was a spectacular custom, chopped and shaved and painted in a two-tone hot pink fuchsia and grey paintjob. Another Ford that fit the pre-’59 guidelines, yet predated the bomba era, was a great classic 1915 Ford Model T. Plenty of car clubs were out with their rides at the show, with many groups full of beautifully restored or customized classics lined up next to each other, one after the other. Among some of the clubs in attendance were members of the Kustom Oldies, the Classic Lowriders and the Pharaohs.
