Playing a favorite: Buffalo Bills (+300)

JAMIE GERMANO/ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE / USA TODAY NETWORK

Even after facing some heavy adversity this season, between various injuries, off-field tragedies, and other setbacks, is anyone surprised to see the Buffalo Bills with the best Super Bowl odds? You shouldn’t be. Josh Allen is here to stay, and this core has been built up over time, thanks to trading for Stefon Diggs and having strong leadership from their coaching staff. The Bills should be seen as a top threat, as they have an extremely talented roster on both sides of the ball, even after Von Miller’s injury.

Buffalo’s first chance to show the world they belong as Super Bowl favorites came in Week 1, crushing the reigning NFL champion Rams. But that game may have been a fluke, with Los Angeles really struggling. Then again, the Bills have the fourth-best offense and the league’s second-best defense through 14 games. Aside from, once again, what looks to be a rushing attack that lacks explosiveness, the Bills are still the lead dogs.

Placing your wager on an ascending contender: Cincinnati Bengals (+850)

Kareem Elgazzar/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK

We saw the surprise run to the Super Bowl a season ago for the Cincinnati Bengals, so we shouldn’t be shocked to see this same team gain momentum down the stretch once again in 2022. They have the NFL’s fifth-most potent scoring offense while also having the 10th-ranked scoring defense. But honestly, this is the Joe Burrow show, as it always has been. The Bengals will go as far as their QB leader can take them, which, as we’ve already seen, can be quite the adventure. With Ja’Marr Chase back from injury, we could see the stripes hit their peak form when it matters most.

Betting on a deep sleeper: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3500)

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Tom Brady. Need we say more? It would be awkward if we didn’t. But until he’s actually ruled out of contention, how can we bet against the man with the most Super Bowl rings in NFL history?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are below .500, but they’re also the current division leaders in the NFC South. Remember how Brady’s Bucs won their rings a couple seasons ago? It came as a Wild Card team, meaning even backing into the playoffs as a fourth seed, no matter what their record is, would give them better odds than when they already proved everyone wrong in 2021.

Super Bowl odds – Picks to avoid: Minnesota Vikings (+2800)

Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

Everyone’s waiting for the bottom to fall out in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The Minnesota Vikings are 11-3. Ten of their wins have been one-possession games. An optimist would suggest their ability to come out ahead in close matchups only galvanizes the locker room, and that may be true.

Yet a pessimist would point to the Vikes having a point differential of just +2 on the year while leading the NFL’s second-worst passing defense. Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell has them playing a bend, but don’t break approach, but how long can Justin Jefferson carry an entire 53-man roster while the defense somehow comes up with clutch turnovers to seal the deal?

Plus, Kirk Cousins. Primetime games are coming, and he’s managed to begin slaying the night-time dragons that have plagued him in the past, defeating Bill Belichick’s Patriots on Thanksgiving, but is the defense really good enough to hang with Patrick Mahomes, the Dallas Cowboys, or the Eagles once again? Not that we’ve seen so far, we certainly wouldn’t be willing to bet otherwise.
