In 2012, Mercedes-Benz turned a B-Class hatchback invisible in a promotion for its very first fuel-cell vehicle that was put into production. John Pendry is a British physicist and a pioneer in the metamaterials field, which refers to a type of nano-engineered microscopic structure that can deflect electromagnetic waves. This gives the material the ability to bend light around an object and therefore render it invisible. Pendry and his team of engineers and scientists at Imperial College London are also researching other ways that could possibly achieve the invisible effect they are looking for. One of these methods is through the science of plasmonics, which is the manipulation and control of light down to the nanometer scale.

Applications in the real world

Along with the theory behind the deflection of light becoming more realistic, the manufacturing cost of the necessary materials is also coming down. This is leading to real-world applications of this technology appearing around the world. Meta is a Canadian company that has partnered with Airbus to develop an optical shielding filter, known as metaAIR. In theory, this would be a shield that could protect pilots from laser strikes, consisting of hundreds of nano-meter layers integrated into the cockpit glass that would work to reflect the various light frequencies and stop the laser radiation. Meta is also working to develop a different transparent material to coat smartphones that will feature robustness and other properties that will speed up the widespread adoption of foldable or bendy smartphones. Metamaterials in general can also be used to prevent earthquake damage in buildings by absorbing and reflecting seismic waves at the foundation level.

The future of vehicle safety?

Most drivers have been in a situation where there is a large vehicle like a truck in front of them, and it is almost impossible to see anything beyond it. These types of situations where large vehicles are blocking the road or fail to check their blind spots increase the likelihood that an accident will occur. Research that is being carried out in many parts of the world says that future motorists may not have to deal with this problem, as they are working on developing “invisible cars.” Similar to the concept of the Mercedes Benz that was mentioned previously, these futuristic vehicles will be equipped with monitors and cameras on the exterior that will provide a real-time view of what is happening in the areas that drivers behind them cannot see. The concept is that by giving the following drivers more visibility of their surroundings, they can make better decisions with this extra data. In turn, these better decisions will hopefully lead to fewer accidents and deaths on the road.

They are of the opinion that driver aids like “Lane Keep Assist” and automatic emergency stop assistance have a bigger impact on accidents as it helps the driver without relying on the driver to activate them.
