Read More »In 2012, Mercedes-Benz turned a B-Class hatchback invisible in a promotion for its very first fuel-cell vehicle that was put into production. This feat was inspired by the James Bond film “Die Another Day.” The invisibility cloak was debuted on the streets of Stuttgart, Germany, and from a distance, there was no car to be seen. To achieve this, Mercedes utilized over $263,000 worth of LED mats that covered the entire side of the car. On the other side, a camera was mounted, and the LEDs were programmed to show the image that was being captured on the other side of the car. This resulted in the car blending into the background, from a few feet away at least. The catch? The computers with their power sources and other necessary gear weighed around 1,100 lb, not exactly something that could be installed into a regular car! Now, 10 years on, the concept of invisible cars is much closer to becoming a reality, thanks to advancements in technology. John Pendry is a British physicist and a pioneer in the metamaterials field, which refers to a type of nano-engineered microscopic structure that can deflect electromagnetic waves. This gives the material the ability to bend light around an object and therefore render it invisible. Pendry and his team of engineers and scientists at Imperial College London are also researching other ways that could possibly achieve the invisible effect they are looking for. One of these methods is through the science of plasmonics, which is the manipulation and control of light down to the nanometer scale.
