A lot happened in the last two decades. In that time, 300,000 people moved to Austin, Texas. “Must See TV” became a thing of the past. And new cars have grown considerably. Back in 2001, the top-selling Honda Accord stretched 189.4 inches between its bumpers. Two decades later, the Accord has slid down the sales list in favor of SUVs, but it’s also grown by about 7 inches. Even more amazingly, today’s top-selling Toyota RAV4 is 16 inches longer than its 2001 counterpart. Engine output has grown, too, and that space will change considerably with the rush toward electrification set to kick into high gear over the next decade. None of the five least-powerful cars in 2001 topped 100 horsepower. Today, the only two remaining minicars — smaller even than subcompacts — have power outputs that low. Beyond that, the next-least-powerful model offers 20 percent more underhood horsey goodness. Few cars are truly slow in 2021. Here’s a look at how the five least-powerful models have changed between 2001 and 2021.

The 5 Least-Powerful Cars in 2001

Amazingly, most of the least powerful models in 2001 are still around in some form or fashion today, though they’ve all changed considerably. The Honda Insight is no longer an ultra-light hatchback with seating for two and virtually no frills. Today’s model is a spacious sedan. Volkswagen will likely never return to the diesel game in the U.S. after the automaker was caught intentionally cheating on emissions testing here. Its Beetle is no more, and the Golf lineup shrinks to just the GTI and Golf R for 2022. Suzuki is back to motorcycles and ATVs, not cars, in the U.S. Special mention: the base Suzuki Vitara SUV put out just 97 horsepower in 2001. Now that was a slow vehicle.

One thing we see a lot more of today is powertrain sharing across different body styles. Automakers still have plenty of choices, but they have gotten way better at creating modular architecture making it relatively easy to slap a sedan or hatchback body on the same underpinnings that can accommodate the same engines and transmissions. That’s what we see with the Toyota Corolla and Prius as well as the Nissan Versa and Kicks. Additionally, the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio are twins behind their different bodies. As we approach what may be the end of the road for internal combustion engines, we see far more complexity under the hood, leading to an increase in both power density and fuel efficiency. The Accent and Rio used 1.5-liter 4-cylinders that were rated at 35 mpg with a 4-speed automatic transmission back in 2001. Today, they come with a 1.6-liter with variable valve timing, putting out 124 more hp from an engine that’s just a hair larger. Even with extra power — and 250 pounds greater curb weight thanks to far more convenience and safety features — the latest Accent is rated at 41 mpg on the highway with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). someone who gets drunk easily (on a glass and a half): You are such a cadbury. Contributor's comments: My son's friends in Armidale NSW used this to describe both those who got drunk easily and also those who got very silly after smoking a small amount of dope. Contributor's comments: I have certainly heard of and used this expression, and I believe it to be reasonably well known in the Sydney area. Contributor's comments: In Adelaide the use of "cadbury" was (is?) used: as in glass and a half. "She is such a Cadbury, she threw up after only 1 drink." Contributor's comments: A lightweight, someone who can't hold their alcohol, comes from the Cadbury ad - a glass and a half: "Look at her, she's drunk after only 2 glasses of wine, what a Cadbury." Contributor's comments: I have lived in Sydney and Canberra, and have never heard of this. I love it! But please recall that it used to be a glass and a half in every quarter pound block (250g) and now it is a glass and a half in every block (125g). Contributor's comments: To go one further - there is the Dynamo - gets drunk on a third of a cup! Contributor's comments: As in, 'a glass and a half and she's on the floor'. I've heard this in Brisbane, but I do have to explain it sometimes!
