EVERYONE knows that England's best performance at the World Cup was in 1966 when they lifted the trophy at Wembley. Since then the Three Lions have faced a lot of disappointments including being knocked out in the semi-final stage of the competition in Russia 2018. 1 England walloped Panama 6-1 at the 2018 World Cup with Jesse Lingard among the scorers

And losing the Euro 2020 final against Itay on their home turf.

But England have hit some huge milestones along the way.

Gareth Southgate's men are looking to lift the World Cup in 2022, and they are in action against France TONIGHT.

What is England's biggest victory?

The Three Lions' biggest victory came way back in 1882.

England beat Ireland 13-0 on February, 18 1882, in a friendly that saw Arthur Brown hit four goals and Howard Vaughton strike five.

They slammed 13 past Ireland again in 1889 beating them 13-2.

Since then big achievements have come against San Marino with an 8-0 victory in March 2013 and a 10-0 thumping on November 15, 2021 with Harry Kane smashing in four. The ten goal triumph helped Gareth Southgate’s side seal qualification for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. And it was their biggest winning margin since scoring ten against USA in 1964. A winning margin of ten was also achieved against the Netherlands in 1907 with a 12-2 win. The following year, England beat Austria 11-1, and in 1947 they slammed ten past Portugal with no reply. England achieved 9-0 triumphs over Luxembourg in 1960 and 1982, and achieved the same score against Switzerland in 1909.

What is England's biggest winning margin at a World Cup finals?

England beat Panama 6-1 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia - with a hat-trick from Kane. In 2022, they recorded their best ever opening match result with a 6-2 win over Iran. Before Russia, the Three Lions had never won by more than three goals at the world's biggest tournament.

They achieved 3-0 wins against Denmark (2002), Paraguay and Poland (both 1986).

Of course England have scored more than three goals before at a World Cup, most importantly in the 1966 final, after extra time. England beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley with a hat-trick from Geoff Hurst and one from Martin Peters.

What is the biggest win by any team at a World Cup?

The biggest margin of victory at a World Cup finals is NINE.

This has been achieved three times - most recently in 1982 when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1. Hungary beat South Korea 9-0 in 1954 and Yugoslavia overcame Zaire by the same scoreline in 1974. The biggest margin of victory in a qualifying match is quite a lot different however. In April 2001, Australia took on American Samoa in a 2002 World Cup qualification (Oceanian zone) game. Australia came out 31-0 winners with Archie Thompson breaking a record for the most goals scored by an individual - 13.

What's the difference between 11 and 14 rugby?

There are two wings: the No. 11, who is the left wing, and the No. 14, the right wing. They are the last line of attack and often score more tries than anyone else.

The front row

You've no doubt heard of a prop or a hooker. These are the players that make up the front row. There are three of them - two props, wearing numbers 1 and 3, and a hooker, wearing number 2 - and they are the first players to come into contact with the opposition. Their basic role is to push at scrums and to clear out rucks. Stocky and not very tall, they get themselves noticed because they are often at the heart of the action. They are the first line of defence but also have a role to play in helping their team move forward. But why are there two props and one hooker? And what is the difference between the two positions? The simple explanation is that the two props are positioned on either side of the hooker, who, being lighter on their feet and quicker, must drive holes in the opposition defence and help their side move forward. Hookers need to be brave in playing a central role in the scrums, and they need to have blind faith in their two props. For their part, props occupy the toughest and most punishing position in rugby and take a lot of hits during the course of a match. Whether you're a hooker or a prop, going in for physical contact is all part of your job, which requires a lot of physical strength. Playing at hooker involves using your speed more. But if you're all about brute strength, then there's no doubt you should be pulling on the No. 1 or No. 3 jersey.
