Read More »Lacrosse may be the oldest organized sport in America, but the sport is in its infancy in Montgomery County. The sport originated in 1636, when a Jesuit missionary in North America observed Huron Indians playing a game with a hide-covered ball carried and hurled from a curved stick with a pouch at the top. The Indians called the game bagataway, but the curved stick resembled a bishop's crosier, or la crosse in French, from which the sport takes its name. Similar in tactics to ice hockey and soccer, lacrosse is played on a field 110 yards long and 60 yards wide. The goals are placed at opposite ends of the field so that the plane of the open goal is 15 yards from the end line. Each goal is six feet high, six feet wide and backed by a net. A circle called the crease surrounds the goal. Offensive players are not allowed in this nine-foot radius area. The playing stick is at least three feet long with a mesh basket at the top. The mouth of the stick, which carries the ball, may be no wider than 12 inches or narrower than five. The sticks, which were once made of ash and webbed with leather thongs, are usually made of fiberglass and have changeable plastic heads and leather mesh webbing. The ball, which is about the same size as a tennis ball, is made of firm sponge rubber and is five and one-quarter ounces in weight. Collegiate games are divided into four 15-minute periods while the high school and youth league games are divided into four periods ranging from 10-12 minutes each. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, there is a five-minute intermission, then play continues. There are two overtime periods of five minutes each. If the score is tied at the end of overtime, it is declared a tie. Lacrosse is played by two teams of 10 players -- three attackmen, three midfielders, three defensemen and one goalie. The object of the game is to put the ball in the opposing team's net. The ball is moved upfield by players carrying it in their stick and passing to teammates. If the ball hits the ground, a player scoops it with his stick but may not touch it with his/her hands. Like basketball, lacrosse players try to pass the ball around to get the best shot possible. Most offensive plays originate behind the crease, where a player tries to feed a cutting teammate for an easy shot. Screens and picks are often used by the offensive team, which is allowed to have only six players within 30 yards of the goal. Since lacrosse is a physical game -- body checking is allowed at all levels for men -- players wear helmets, shoulder pads and other protective gear. They also wear padded gloves to protect their hands from stick checks. Body checking is not allowed at the women's level.

They surveyed thousands of people to find out which sporting activities would make a member of the opposite sex more attractive. The results revealed that 57% of women found climbing attractive, making it the sexiest sport from a female perspective. In second place was extreme sports (56%), followed by football (52%), and hiking (51%). At the bottom of their list came aerobics and golf, with just 9% and 13% of the vote, respectively. Meanwhile, men revealed to be most attracted to women into aerobics (70%), followed by yoga (65%), and going to the gym (64%). Last on the list was bodybuilding (5%), rugby (6%), and golf (18%). 'Our findings suggest that women who've been pounding the pavements in search of love would do better taking up aerobics, while men seeking women need to ditch the weights and get on the climbing wall,' said Murphy. 'That said, the best way to find happiness - not to mention a long-lasting fitness regime - is to do what you love. Unless that is, it's golf!'
