Are you competitive, extrovert, introvert or a perfectionist? According to sports psychologists, understanding your personality type is essential to choosing the right exercise regime. Not only can the perfect match keep you motivated, choosing a sport that does not play to your strengths can reduce self-esteem and end up creating stress rather than relieving it. Here sports psychologist Melinda Nicci explains exactly what exercise you should be focusing on to get the most out of your workout. She said: 'It’s so important to find an activity that feels comfortable for you because it can affect how you feel about yourself. Competitive types

Competitive types jump at the chance to compete against others, are fairly self-motivated but also like to get validation from external sources. They wouldn’t want to go for a gentle jog - they may always want to better their time. Avoid: Having a competitive personality, does not mean you should take every opportunity to compete in sports, warns Melinda, who is also founbder of Baby2Body.com. In fact, despite team sports seeming like the perfect fit, Melinda believes they are best avoided. 'Being involved in team sports could end up becoming destructive - especially if it is just for leisure and you end up taking it too seriously,' she says. 'The danger is that it can alienate other people on the team and take the fun out of it for others.' It's also not necessarily psychologically healthy. 'Competitive types might start internalising that they are not achieving what they should be,' she says. Try: 'Anything that is goal-orientated is great - and that can be something that involves competing with yourself rather than others,' says Melinda. 'It's important to have something you can measure – the time of a run, swim or cycle, for example. Melinda also suggests entering fun runs and competitions. Training for a competition might help you and get into the zone - but you won't lose all your friends over it! 'You can do any sport or exercise as long as you can think of ways to set yourself goals to keep yourself motivated and satisfied,' adds Melinda.

Is this you? Do you like being where it's all happening? Extroverts love being surrounded by friends, meeting new people and engaging in conversation.

They gravitate towards sociable activities and want to engage with other people.

Avoid: 'Solo training for a marathon or exercising at home alone won't be enjoyable for someone who is very sociable and extrovert, which means it will be hard to remain motivated,' say Melinda. But if you think that a group aerobics class is the perfect fit for an extrovert, think again. Melinda believes they could be frustrating for people who like to take leadership roles and engage. 'Although you are surrounded by people there's often not much opportunity to take the lead or even talk to others,' she says. 'If you are just required to go along with the group with someone else leading that could be negative for an extrovert.' Is this you? Do you enjoy working on your own, but feel less keen on being thrust into a crowd full of people you need to socialise with?

Introverts may come across as less forceful but don't be fooled - they are often very self-reliant and internally motivated - and they don't need the external testing or measuring. Avoid: Although shy people are often encouraged by others to do sociable activities to help build their confidence, Melinda advises no such thing when it comes to sport.

'Introverts are more likely to be self-conscious and self aware around other people,' says Melinda, who believes when it comes to exercise it's best to play to your strength rather than try to change perceived weaknesses. Try: 'Sports and activities that require self-motivation but don't necessarily involve competing with others are perfect,' Melinda says. 'They are likely to do well at something like running or gym work because they are less likely to need external validation.' Melinda also recommends more solitary sports where you have to pit yourself against the elements or nature - like rock climbing, surfing or even horse riding. 'These need plenty of self-motivation and although there is also often done alongside others they are not intrinsically sociable,' she says. Perfect fit: Rock climbing, surfing, horse riding or working out at the gym Perfectionists: 'Pursuits like swimming, ballet or yoga, which involve perfecting technique are the best way to channel perfectionism,' says Melinda

Perfectionists have very high standards but hard on themselves can often result in negative feelings. Avoid: 'Group sports might not work well for this personality type because they may get frustrated with others in the team who don’t live up to their expectations,' says Melinda. She also warns against anything that is too focused on the external results rather than the sport itself as there's a danger of becoming obsessed and self-critical. Try: 'Focus on improving your ability rather than improving your body, which could end up setting yourself up for lots of negative feelings,' says Melinda. 'Pursuits like swimming, ballet or yoga, which involve perfecting technique are the best way to channel perfectionism.' Melinda advises finding a sport, where there's constantly room to improve your ability.
