FanDuel’s overwhelming presence in the United States expanded into the Great White North as the brand went live in Ontario, Canada on April 4, 2022. The launch marked the start of a new iGaming market up in Ontario, officially making the province Canada‘s first to allow outside operators to virtually set up shop in their jurisdiction. FanDuel joins a bevy of popular U.S. operators making the plunge into uncharted waters and should have no trouble making its mark with both sports betting and its online casino product going live on Ontario’s earliest date. Upcoming FanDuel state launches

While already up and running in nearly every state with legalized gambling, FanDuel Sportsbook isn’t slowing down in terms of expansion throughout the United States. As key states such as Massachusetts and Ohio prepare for their upcoming launches, and others like California move towards a potential sports betting legalization, bettors in those states can expect at least minimal interest from FanDuel Sportsbook. Ohio

Ohio is up next on the docket, as the state fully legalized sports betting back in December 2021. The state will officially launch its iGaming market on January 1, 2023, meaning players will unfortunately have to wait until then to begin using apps like FanDuel. Once the Ohio market does go live, residents of the state will have access to FanDuel Sportsbook via the brand’s partnership with the Belterra Park Gaming & Entertainment Center in Cincinnati. FanDuel’s app and website will operate as the primary online skin for Belterra, while a retail FanDuel Sportsbook at the Boyd Gaming property is also in the works for 2023.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts was the most recent state to announce a full-fledged sports betting legalization, making waves on the morning of August 1, 2022. The state’s official launch is projected for early 2023, leaving FanDuel some time to figure out its plan for entry. It is expected that both FanDuel and its Massachusetts-based rival, DraftKings, will be major players for two of the state’s seven available stand-alone mobile platforms.

California

California is by far the biggest and most valuable state in terms of a potential sports betting legalization, and locals will now get the chance to vote on the matter this November. FanDuel was one of the original commercial operators that banded together to put forth the California Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Support Act, an initiative that will officially appear on the upcoming November ballot as Proposition 27. In a recent poll provided by the Los Angeles Times and the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, only 27% of voters backed the digital-only Proposition 27. In contrast, 31% of voters were in favor of Proposition 26, a retail-only sports betting campaign being pushed by the state’s Native American tribes. It remains to be seen what exactly will happen in California moving forward, but sports betting at the moment seems unlikely to pass in 2022.

At this point, a majority of people probably use mobile apps, which limits to some extent the amount you can see on screen. With the web platform, we like the more robust display of information so you can see more while trying to process a lot of information. It’s very easy to click around without any lag or glitches. The site is clean and information-rich without overwhelming bells-and-whistle clutter. It’s a simple process to find the most prominent sports, view promotions, check your bet slip, and perform just about any necessary sports betting function. If it’s available on the mobile app, it can be done on FanDuel’s desktop platform as well.

Pricing and betting options at FanDuel Sportsbook

As for betting options, FanDuel offers all the standard straight wagers one should expect plus a ton of player and game props, futures, bets where you can bet on fantasy points, and combination bets, such as a certain running back to rush for 67.5 yards or more and his team to win.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are loads of props and futures for all of the most popular sports including tennis, soccer, hockey, MMA, boxing, auto racing, college basketball, baseball and more. Sports offered at FanDuel Sportsbook include all of those plus golf, motor racing, rugby, and all the soccer leagues — La Liga, Major League Soccer, English Premier League, Serie A — pretty much every European country and so forth. Also, like other major players in the industry, FanDuel regularly offers “odds boosts” — typically on prop bets, such as a player to hit a home run in a game, a team to cover the spread, or on futures like a golfer to win a certain tournament. These offers rotate from day to day.

Pricing

SportsHandle has compared FanDuel’s pricing with two dozen sportsbooks operating online nationwide, and has found that it ranks consistently among the best (lowest) pricing for straight bets, money lines, futures, and especially props. They’re not always posting the best or lowest vig across all categories, but it’s usually right there. As for pricing, on pregame sides, it’s usually industry standard 20 cents (-110 both ways) for basketball and football spreads, with competitive run line and puck line pricing for baseball and hockey, respectively. Some U.S. sportsbooks have offered “reduced juice” (-105 lines), while others have consistently offered inferior pricing, often 25 or 30 cents on spread bets for major sports, or even worse in non-competitive markets such as Montana, Oregon, and Washington, D.C.

FanDuel is also near the top of the pack for moneyline pricing.

Following extensive usage, we have observed equal or better prices on moneylines at FanDuel compared with some of the competition. In some cases, we’ve even observed better pricing on the same game for both the underdog and favorite (such as +135/-160 versus +125/-165), meaning whichever side you’re betting, you’re better off placing that wager on FanDuel. This is not always the case; the overall point is that the pricing on FanDuel is top-tier for the market. And before we leave that, it’s especially true for in-game wagering – where the vig across the market is often a little bit higher. We’ve typically seen FanDuel stay at around 20 or 25-cent lines on live wagering, while some competitors may go as high as 35 or 50-cents on spread bets, with correspondingly less appealing prices on moneylines as compared with FanDuel.

Cash out

Like many other U.S. legal sportsbooks, FanDuel offers the “cash out” feature on bets that have already been placed. It’s not always available but when it is, you’ll basically have the option to accept an offer to buy out your wager before the event/game/prop is decided. In many cases, you’ll have the option to cash out for the full amount of your wager if the odds on your bet have not changed (in either direction). A cash out may be offered pre-game, in-game, or on a futures bet before the event has concluded (such as National League champion in MLB). The cash out offers are a function of the probability of your bet winning or losing, and as you should expect, you’ll get offered less than the true probability. For example, if you bet $100 on the Kansas City Chiefs preseason to win the Super Bowl at +800, and they’ve locked up the No. 1 seed for the AFC playoffs, FanDuel might offer you $300 at that point. Less than half your potential win, but, that’s gambling and you can lock up some guaranteed profit if you want. Some recreational players may want to pocket the profit, while EV+ bettors (expected value) would almost certainly let it ride. That said, if you have a sense that the bet is not going to go your way, you may want to grab the profit and move on.

Prop bets

As noted earlier, FanDuel is among the strongest in the market for prop bets. Pricing, range of offerings, and perhaps underrated — FanDuel usually posts prop bets on games well in advance of some market competitors. For example, on a Wednesday or Thursday before a Sunday NFL game, you can usually find a lot of player and game props already posted, such as receptions, yards, and pass attempts. At many other sportsbooks, prop markets do not become available until right before game time. A lot of props are contingent upon injury and player participation reports, of course, but in general, you can count on FanDuel to post props on the earlier side. And that’s an area where there’s less money or “liquidity” in the market, meaning you can more often find an edge against the house, based on your assessment of the players and the game.

Parlays and teasers

For parlays, every payout is the same as what you’ll find outside the U.S., except for popular 3-way parlays, which pay at +595. That’s compared to +600 or 6/1. Small difference — but not for the book, which will add up over time. For teasers, you can make anywhere from a standard 6-point teaser all the way up to a 14-point teaser in football. Payouts on teasers are industry standard compared to Nevada sportsbooks. For example, a 3-leg, 6-point football teaser will pay +140. But elsewhere, some sportsbooks are eschewing a fixed pricing model for teasers and generating prices based on the individual prices. Our research indicates that in some cases, this results in a better price at other sportsbooks. That said, sportsbooks usually come out ahead (or way ahead) on parlays and teasers, so perhaps it’s not a great idea to go chasing them. If you’re looking for a number different from what’s posted, FanDuel offers a lot of alternative lines with the corresponding pricing. So if the spread is +5.5 (-110) you can get a price for -3.5 or +7.5 and so forth. But you can’t “buy” a point in the old school sense — to go from +2.5 to +3 in a football game for example. You can choose from what’s posted and priced out. They will offer a long list of alternative lines on game totals as well as spreads. Notice at the bottom of the line slip you can turn on “review line changes.” This gives you the option — if a line or price changes while you’re considering the wager — to accept or reject it. This is opposed to the new number getting processed, which does happen at some sportsbooks.

“Same-game parlays”

When the sportsbook first launched, bettors could not make “correlation” parlays or teasers. In other words, you couldn’t parlay or tease sides/totals in the same game, or pair sides/totals with props in the same game, either. However, in 2020, FD Sportsbook began offering “Same Game Parlays” that do allow correlation, such as Team A to win and Over, Players A, B and C to score a touchdown in the same game, or various unique combinations, some of them that might pay rather handsomely. Sports Handle spoke with FanDuel Sportsbook Director John Sheeran about the same-game parlay concept. Sheeran said: it’s something we’re really proud of. “SGP” is a product that we’ve had in Europe for some time. And we’re delighted to kind of be the first ones in the U.S. to deliver it. I think it really works exceptionally well in sports where player participation skews. So the NBA, for example, is one where over points for Anthony Davis and LeBron James, as well as game elements, are really popular. The NFL market offering around player props is exceptional. And the standalone games, I think, just give people an opportunity to bet in a market that they may have sat out otherwise. Certain people don’t want to risk $20 to win $18 on a spread or a total. And now they can have a $5 same-game parlay that gives them an interest to the entirety of the game. It can pay off a 100-1. The best approach on these is to apply your “theory” of the game. For example, if you think the Rams will win in a blowout over the Cardinals, begin rushing the ball heavily once they have a lead, and that the Cardinals are forced to pass a lot to catch up … you might bet the Rams spread, the Rams top running back to go over his yardage total, and the Cardinals top receiver to go over his yardage total as well. Rather than choosing random events, your bet is rooted in correlation, based on your estimation of how the game will unfold. One cool feature about FanDuel Sportsbook that we have not yet seen elsewhere is that if you have a SGP in your betslip, each leg will be updated as the game progresses so you can track where the bet stands. For instance, consider this example from a Thursday Night Football game in Oct. 2022, early in the game. FanDuel not only provides updates for each leg placed in your SGP throughout the course of a game, but also does not void the entire bet if one leg ends up pushing or getting voided! Some of FanDuel’s biggest competitors, like DraftKings for example, are known for counting an entire SGP as a loss if one of the legs is simply graded as a push or is voided – not at FanDuel. Instead, FanDuel will recalculate the odds for your SGP, removing the voided/pushed selection while lowering the total odds and payout. This is a much more ideal scenario for the bettor, and one that presents a massive advantage to placing your Same Game Parlays with FanDuel over another book.

Whether it’s halftime of a primetime NFL game or in between rounds during a UFC bout, FanDuel presents its players with some of the sharpest live odds in the industry. As we briefly mentioned above, FanDuel sticks with 20 or 25-cent lines when it comes to its live betting options, which is considerably lower than the majority of its competitors. Lines are constantly updated on the site’s live betting menu, with a green arrow representing any odds that’ve improved, and a red arrow designating odds that have worsened. Considering the fast-paced nature of live betting, FanDuel Sportsbook may take a moment or two to process your in-play wager – this is a common occurrence with any sportsbook offering live action. For the most part, your wager should go through with the odds you originally selected. At times, the odds may move too quickly and force you to readjust your bet, however FanDuel will be sure to confirm the odds change with you before making anything official. Aside from a few brief delays here and there, the overall live betting experience at FanDuel is a very good one.

Accessible on both the app and web are the options for: Betting Guide, Terms and Conditions, House Rules, Responsible Gaming, and Support. As for betting limits, we don’t quite have the funds to test the upper limits for how much you can get down. Contact them to find out about that. You can also chat with a real customer service representative 24/7. Sheeran also spoke with Sports Handle about the sportsbook’s approach to bookmaking, and its willingness to “take a position” on a game, which may mean you find a line or price that’s not available elsewhere in their market. Part of this is why FanDuel has become so big and popular in the U.S., meaning they’re handling a very large volume of bets and dollars, and don’t mind day-to-day or month-to-month volatility. In other words, they can take more risks. As you may be aware, in September 2018, a man at the Meadowlands took advantage of a pricing glitch, betting $110 at 750-1 odds to win $82,000 when the actual price should have been -600. After a review and a lot of blowback, the company decided to honor the bet when, if you do read those house rules, they could have justifiably declined to do so based on a “palpable error.” So – read those terms and conditions at any and every sportsbook where you play, folks.

User experience

As indicated in the discussion of the app and web platform above, we really enjoy both of FanDuel’s platforms. The adjectives that fit best are: smooth, clean, intuitive, accessible, and fast. And a lack of clutter and plenty of clarity. Tracking your bets in progress? If you’ve got a multi-legged teaser or parlay in the works, under ‘Active Wagers’ (or open bets) in the bet slip field, a winning leg will get shaded light blue. It’s a nice tracking device. If that leg flops, you’ll see a strikethrough under settled wagers. We did have one big complaint regarding bet history: Right now if you go to the “Account” button on the app on the bottom pane, or the “person” button/symbol next to your balance on the web version, you’ll find Account History and there’s a small line that says “Click here to see your detailed bet history.” From there, the “Sportsbook Wagers” tab under account history shows you the bet slip numbers — but doesn’t display the actual bet. The “Account Summary” is a holistic profit/losses display. The only way to look through all of your wagers is through “Settled” bets, by adjusting the calendar to a defined period, and then sifting through. It’s not a great or convenient field for that purpose. Also, while navigating “bet history” under the icon shaped like a Lego person, it’s easy to get signed out, which is annoying. It should be easy to access a detailed “bet history” and to sort by date frames to include profits/loss and wins/losses over any given span. Serious bettors will (and do) need to keep spreadsheets to track their performances. Here they will certainly have to. Many of the operators located outside of the U.S. offer the ability to easily navigate past wagers; the pages displaying history and performances are among the highest-viewed pages a sportsbook sees. People want to know — rather than just blindly moving the bankroll. We hope that FanDuel will look into improving this, eventually making past wagers much more easily accessible.

Bettor friendly

But back to the positives, FanDuel Sportsbook is generally regarded as a “sports bettor’s sportsbook” that accepts and invites “sharp” action and recreational players alike. When you put in a bet, unlike at some other sportsbooks, in our experience (with mostly lower-limit wagers), it will not slow down a wager and submit it for “processing” where it might be accepted or rejected. Typically bet it and you’re done. FanDuel is not just a sports betting service. As many already know, FanDuel got its start in the industry by rising to the top as one of the nation’s premier Daily Fantasy Sports providers. Since making the jump into both bookmaking and online casino operations, FanDuel has provided its players with the utmost convenience by allowing them to switch between all three services using just one account.
