Which is greater 1 4 or 1 5?

Draw a circle and divide it into 4 equal parts by drawing 2 lines through the centre that intersect at 90 degress. Each slice of the circle is 1/4 of the circle. If you divide the same circle into five equal slices then the slices will be smaller. Hence 1/5 of the circle is smaller than 1/4 of the circle.

Subject: Why is 1/4 bigger than 1/5 Name: Sherry

Who is asking: Student

Level: Elementary Question:

I have to do a math project for my teacher education class. The question that I am working on is why is 1/4 bigger than 1/5. Hi Sherry, I have replies for you from three people.

First from Paul. Answer1:

Dividing by a larger number produces a smaller number. Answer2:

1/4 is the same as 5/20 (multiply top and bottom by 5) 1/5 is the same as 4/20 (multiply top and bottom by 4) Now the denominators (bottom number of a fraction) are the same so the size of the numerator (top number of a fraction) determines the size of the fraction. Answer3: Draw a circle and divide it into 4 equal parts by drawing 2 lines through the centre that intersect at 90 degress. Each slice of the circle is 1/4 of the circle. If you divide the same circle into five equal slices then the slices will be smaller. Hence 1/5 of the circle is smaller than 1/4 of the circle. And then from Claude. My friend's 4 year old son is starting to understand fractions also. Recently he was asked what he gets when cutting a pizza in two and said "halves". Then he was asked what he gets when cutting halves in two and said "quarters". Then he was asked what he gets when cutting quarters in two and said "eights". Then he was asked what he gets when cutting eights in two and said "I don't know", then he tought about it for a while and said "sixteenths". Then he was asked what he gets when putting four quarters together and said "one". Then he was asked what he gets when putting eight eights together and said "I don't know", then he tought about it for a while and said "one". Of course, the ordering of fourths and fifths would have to come a bit later, but my guess is that children can understand elementary facts about fractions early enough if you respect their own pace. Finally from Penny. I would have the children decide themselves by describing a situation such as: Paul and Mary's families each had a regular size pizza for dinner. There are 4 people in Paul's family so he got 1/4 of a pizza. There are 5 people in Mary's family so Mary got 1/5 of a pizza. Who got the larger piece? Why? Cheers,

Which is larger 3 4 7 8 8 10 7 9?

Another way that you could do this is 3, 4 is 0.75 78 is 0.875, eight, 0.8 and 790.7 repeating. So obviously again you can see that 7/8 is the greatest.

Largest fraction. So I have 3/4. I have seven ace. I have eight tents and I have seven nines. So what we could do is we could find a common denominator. So nine times 10 times eight Is 720. They make sure 720 divided by four. Okay good. So 3/4 720. Then I have um actually, so this is one way to do it is if you find a common denominator, so we'll do it a different way to that. I think that is pretty easy to do. So I have 3.4 Is so 4 720. Oops Divided by four is 1 80 times three. So that's 540. Then I have seven ace. And So 720 divided by eight is 90. So seven times 90 is 630. Then I have eight tents. 7 20. So eight times 72. It is 576. You just fix this. I don't like what that looks like. Okay. And then I have seven nights in 7 20. So 7 20 divided by nine is 80. So seven times 80 is 560. So the largest fraction here would be seven ace. That would be the largest fraction. Another way that you could do this is 3, 4 is 0.75 78 is 0.875, eight, 0.8 and 790.7 repeating. So obviously again you can see that 7/8 is the greatest. I hope that this video helps.
