Average IQ by State

Intelligence Quotient, often abbreviated as IQ, is a measure of a person’s cognitive ability and intelligence. IQ tests are widely used to assess the intellectual aptitudes of students, job applicants and others in various fields. Intelligence quotient is calculated by taking an individual’s mental age (determined by an IQ test) over their chronological age and then multiplying it by 100. In other words, IQ is a score that reflects how well a person can think abstractly, comprehend complex concepts, reason logically and solve problems. A typical range for the IQ score is between 70-150 with scores between 140-150 considered to be very high or “genius” level intelligence. Higher scores correlate with higher education levels, better jobs and higher incomes. But an IQ score alone doesn’t determine a person’s success or potential; rather, it is only one factor among many that need to be taken into account when evaluating someone’s academic and professional accomplishments. Additionally, research has suggested that environmental factors such as education and access to resources play a role in overall intelligence levels. For example, studies have shown that students who attend high-performing schools tend to have higher IQ scores than students who attend lower-performing schools. Researchers also believe that age plays a part, as IQ levels are typically highest during early adulthood and decline slowly with age thereafter. While some may take solace in their own numeric ranking relative to others’, it’s important to remember that IQ scores don’t necessarily reflect real-world intelligence or success.

Intelligence vs Education

The difference between education and intelligence is often misunderstood. Education does not equate to intelligence; rather, it gives one the tools to use their intellect. Intelligence is an inborn trait inherited from genetics, whereas education is acquired through instruction and experience. Intelligence itself encompasses a wide range of abilities such as problem-solving skills, creativity, logical reasoning, abstract thinking, comprehension of complex concepts and more. Whereas education focuses on the acquisition of knowledge—the imparting of facts and theories through books or other sources—intelligence has more to do with the application of this knowledge. To be successful in any field requires both “book learning” and the ability to think critically and analytically in order to apply the learned information into meaningful context. That said, education can be seen as providing a platform for individuals to develop their innate intelligence while honing their existing skills; thus allowing them to become fully realized versions of themselves. Education opens doors that would otherwise remain shut by increasing one’s capacity for expression and understanding; allowing someone to reach their full potential as an individual with a greater level of confidence than they may have been able to achieve without it.

Types of Intelligence

There are many theories on what makes up intelligence such as Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences which argues that there are eight distinct types of intelligences; verbal-linguistic intelligence (using language to explain things), logical-mathematical intelligence (ability to solve mathematical or logical equations), spatial intelligence (ability to think visually), bodily-kinesthetic intelligence (the ability to use one’s body for expression), musical intelligence (use of music for communication), interpersonal intelligence (ability to understand others), intrapersonal intelligence (understanding oneself) and naturalist Intelligence (natural world observation). All these factors come together into our overall understanding of an individual’s intellect which is assessed through an IQ test.

Average IQ in USA

The average IQ in the United States is 98, which falls within the range of average intelligence. This average has remained relatively consistent over the past century and is used to measure a person’s general level of intelligence. Although intelligence can vary greatly between individuals, about 68% of the population in the U.S. has an IQ between 85 to 115, with women generally having a higher IQ than men. Generally speaking, it appears that states in the north-eastern and western regions of the United States tend to have higher average IQs. For example, the state of Minnesota has an average IQ of around 103.7 and New Jersey has an average IQ of around 102.8. Other states with particularly high average IQs, also in the northern hemisphere of the United States, include Massachusetts with an average of 104.2, the highest average in the country, Washington 101.9, Connecticut 103.1, New Hampshire 104.2, Vermont and North Dakota both with an average of 103.8. In contrast, southern states such as Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, New Mexico, and Louisiana all have lower average scores. All of which are ranking in the bottom ten of lowest average IQ scores by state.

States With the Highest IQs

The states with the highest IQ scores in the country, include: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Vermont, Minnesota, Maine, Montana, and Iowa are located predominantly in the Northeast, North, and Northwest of the U.S. Many theories have tried to explain why some states are “smarter” than others, including proposals that argue that colder climates could favor higher IQs. Other factors like genetics may play a role in the development of an individual’s intelligence. Yet, these propositions do not provide the full picture of why Massachusetts or New Hampshire have higher IQ scores. A crucial element to look at is education: it is proven that easy and affordable access to robust and efficient education is key in explaining IQ variations. The states with the highest IQs all have great education systems and programs. Massachusetts for example is home to internationally-recognized universities including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Boston University. As for New Hampshire, the state has one of the highest percentages of adults who have a high school diploma. Massachusetts, with an average IQ of 104.3, is the state that ranks highest for average IQ in the United States, but only by 0.1, as New Hampshire comes in second with a score of 104.2. North Dakota is positioned in third place with a score of 103.3 and only 0.5 points above Vermont, placed fourth, with an average score of 103.8. Minnesota in fifth place, holds an IQ score of 103.7, only 0.1 point below that of fourth-place Vermont. Both Maine, sixth place, and Montana, seventh, have an average IQ score of 103.4. The state of Iowa ranked eighth and Connecticut, ranked ninth, both hold an average IQ score of 103.1. Wisconsin, ranked tenth, has an IQ score of 102.9. As one can see, the difference between these states’ average IQ is small.

The 10 states with the highest IQ are:

Massachusetts – 104.3 New Hampshire – 104.2 North Dakota – 103.8 Vermont – 103.8 Minnesota – 103.7 Maine – 103.4 Montana – 103.4 Iowa – 103.2 Connecticut – 103.1 Wisconsin – 102.9

States With the Lowest IQs

While some states may be considered to be the “smartest”, it also suggests that others that do not rank as high and are the “dumbest”. The states with the lowest IQs are California, Louisiana, and Mississippi. It should be noted that these states are not in any way less smart per se, but have a greater concentration of individuals with lower IQ scores. Various factors may favor lower IQ, such as education, wealth, nutrition, and public policies. Health is another key factor. Indeed, a recent study showed that the development of the brain during childhood consumes close to 90% of a newborn calorie intake. If this newborn is contaminated by an infectious disease, part of its energy will be directed to fighting the disease, and not to develop the brain. All three states with the lowest IQs in the U.S. – Mississippi, Louisiana, and California – have high levels of infectious disease as well. This suggests that infectious disease could be one of the primary causes of low IQ in these three states. The state of Mississippi, with a score of 94.2, has the lowest average IQ score in the United States. The second lowest IQ score in the country is Louisiana with an IQ score of 95.3, this is only 0.2 points less than California, which has an IQ score of 95.5 and places the state in the third position. Hawaii is ranked in fourth place, by a 0.1 difference, and has an IQ score of 95.6. Both Alabama, fifth place, and New Mexico, sixth, have an IQ score of 95.7 and once again only a 0.1 difference compared to fourth place Hawaii. The state of Nevada, in seventh place, has an IQ score of 96.5. In eighth place, the state of Arizona has an IQ score of 97.4 and by a 0.1 difference, Arkansas takes ninth place Arkansas with a score of 97.5. Tennessee comes in tenth with an average IQ score of 97.7.
