Who has been the world’s best darts player in 2022? Well, the easy way of figuring this out would be to look at the PDC’s Order of Merit. However, we at William Hill wanted to take a more analytical approach. The PDC Order of Merit is a money-based system. Money earned from ranking events elevates or decreases a player’s world ranking. This ranking format is done on a two-year system, therefore, should a player win the Darts World Championship in 2022 they would not have to defend the money earned until 2024. To make a long story short; the ranking system is complicated… we won’t even get started on the three other Order of Merit’s that the PDC use for the Player’s Championship, European Championship and Pro Tour. We at William Hill wanted to see a ranking system which included everything on the PDC Tour. All events, most 180s, 12-month average, checkout percentage and to add a little spice… nine dart finishes. We wanted to peel away the layers and see who really was the best darts player of 2022. To do this we needed some rules. In order to qualify for our ranking system, a player needed to win at least two events across the year. 13 players made the cut. This caused us an issue, we needed to whittle the list down to ten. Next, more than 365 maximums across the season. One for each day of the year. Nathan Aspinall and Rob Cross were cut from the list. Finally, the players on only two titles needed to have a checkout percentage above 40%. Bingo. Dimitri Van den Bergh was our last casualty. We had our list.

How the list works:

We collated; Total Titles, Total 180s, 12-Month Average, Nine Dart Finishes and the Checkout Percentage of all players in the list across the season. For each category the players would be ranked one through ten, receiving a point total directly corresponding to their place on the list. Therefore, Michael van Gerwen, who has won NINE titles so far across the 2022 season received ten points, Michael Smith gained nine points after winning six titles, Gerwyn Price and Luke Humphries both scored eight points and so on and so forth. After many days and hours of calculation, the final list formed. We discovered who statistically the best darts player of 2022 was. Drumroll please…

GERWYN PRICE and MICHAEL SMITH

Michael Smith:

Always the bridesmaid and never the bride, was a saying which has followed Michael Smith for most of his career. The most natural action in darts and the most illustrious 180 hitter in the game. Bully Boy hit 132 more maximums than second on the list, Peter Wright. Astonishing. Smith could have added at least three more titles to his tally, losing in the World Championship final, UK Open final and the European Championship final. He finally hit the jackpot at the Grand Slam of Darts, winning the first major title of his career against Nathan Aspinall.

Gerwyn Price:

Four televised nine darters in a year. That’s unheard of. The Iceman has been throwing them in for fun this season. With four perfect legs you can see why ‘Gezzy’ won five titles this season, the third highest total on our list. Price ranked solidly on each individual list, racking the points up for the overall standings. By his own admission he hasn’t hit the heights of the two years previous, but he’s still at the top of the sport of darts.
