LAST week ABI exposed how a comedian Kapil Sharma attended a Bookie’s party at Dubai and promoted cricket betting, now ABI is in possession of details that many Bollywood actors, actresses and cricketers are promoting cricket betting through social media sites. These celebrities are charging huge money from bookies.
The infamous bookie Saurabh Chandrakar (owner of Mahadev Book) had on its third anniversary on September 18, 2022 thrown a party for the bookies and punters at Fairmont Hotel, Trade Centre, Dubai. Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, Aftab Shivdasani, Comedian Kapil Sharma, Singer Sukhvinder Singh, actress Urvashi Rautela, Sophie Chaudhary, Nargis Fakhri, Daisy Shah, Ishita Raj, Neha Sharma, Shamita Shetty, Preeti Jhangiyani, Sneha Ullal, Sonali Sehgal, Ishita Dutta, Elnaaz and Giorgia Adriani (girlfriend of Arbaz Khan) attended the party. All these celebrities charged a huge amount to attend the party but Urvashi Rautela charged Rs 35 lakh and Sophie Chaudhary charged Rs 7 Lakh extra as they stayed back one more night in Dubai.
Sources said Mahadev Book spent Rs 35 crore on the party but unfortunately the social media credit is taken by Hitesh Khushlani and Sahil Khan of the Lion Book, which has created a fight between these two bookies. Actor Sahil Khan was signed as event coordinator of the party by Mahadev Book but he posted it as the success party of the Lion Book.
Cricket betting is illegal in India but Bollywood actors and actresses are frequently promoting this illegal business through social media sites. This is a definite grey area, as while betting is illegal in India, there is no notice of various online betting sites mushrooming, which are operated by bookies outside India, but are frequented by Indians, who use these websites to indulge in betting activities. The Government should come with a direction, either to declare these online betting sites as illegal or legal, and do away with the legal ambiguity and loopholes that the current situation leads to. Either way, it is extremely shameful that such well known celebrities are promoting betting sites which can lead to addiction among the youth of the country, and can lead to extreme financial losses.
