The word suspended is most often used when a sporting event is in-play and something has happened during the event that is likely to dramatically change the current in-play odds. You can’t place bets when a betting market is suspended, and you also won’t be able to cash out any bets you placed before or during the event while the market is suspended – hence the expression ‘suspended bet’.

Why Do Bookies Suspend Betting On Some Markets?

Bookmakers will suspend betting on a sporting market when they think the odds are no longer a true reflection of the probability of all possible outcomes. For example, let’s say that a bookmaker priced up a football match between Leicester City and Tottenham, with Leicester at 7/4 (2.75), the draw 2/1 (3.00), and Tottenham 15/8 (2.875). The match kicks-off with these odds still available but, as Jamie Vardy bursts through in the opening minute and looks sure to score, the bookies suspend in-play betting and cash outs. The reason bookies suspend betting is, if Vardy scores, the odds for the match will be significantly different. At 1-0 up, for example, the bookies may then bet Leicester 4/7, the draw 3/1 and Tottenham 5/1. Of course, if Vardy misses, the odds will return to something like the starting odds. That’s why the bookies suspend betting in-play, as it gives them time to change the odds without having to lay bets at prices they don’t want to. While betting will be suspended for just a few seconds in most instances, some events that can happen during a football match can force the betting to be suspended for much longer periods, such as injuries to key players and potential red cards.

What Are Suspended Bets In Horse Racing?

In-play betting in horse racing can be very exciting, but it’s not always easy to get in-play bets on in races. Just imagine trying to change the in-play odds during a 20-runner 5-furlong sprint. In such instances, many bookies simply suspend betting during the race. Some bookmakers still offer in-play odds, but these are normally much lower than the real chances of the horses winning. It’s easier for bookies to offer in-play odds in longer races on the flat or jumps races, but these may also be suspended. Suspensions in jumps races are especially common, as important horses can make significant mistakes, fall, be brought down, or unseat their riders, all of which normally cause the market to be suspended for a short time. Ante-post betting is also very popular in horse racing and, while bookies offer odds on future races throughout the year, they also sometimes suspend these markets. These suspensions are normally caused by the news that a significant horse will not or may not be running in the race. This causes bookies to suspend betting while they re-price the market. On-the-day horse racing markets can also be suspended before they become an in-play market, and this is normally because one or more horses have been declared non-runners. Bookies will suspend the old market while they form a new one. Bookies will also apply a rule 4 deduction to all bets placed before the new market was formed.

What Are Suspended Bets In Golf?

Golf is another popular sport in which suspended bets are common, and that’s because there can be massive swings in a short space of time. Imagine a scenario where the leader is three shots clear and seemingly cruising, but he then bogeys the next hole just as his closest rival eagles a par-5. That three- shot lead has disappeared in second, and the bookies will suspend betting while they hastily re-price the market. Instances like this golf are also commonplace, which is why golf markets are frequently suspended. There are also lots of other reasons why golf markets are suspended, such as players having an obvious birdie chance, players hitting balls out of bounds or in hazards and incurring penalty strokes. Ante-post golf markets are also sometimes suspended following the withdrawal of a key player. This will normally be a player that occupies a large percentage of the market, typically Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, John Rahm, or Justin Thomas.
